One Month In — Settling, Serving, and Seeing God at Work

deese-2019profile2

We cant believe it’s already been a month since we arrived in Panama? It feels like we’ve lived a lifetime in the past few weeks—and yet, it’s only the beginning of this beautiful new chapter. We wanted to take a moment to share what’s been happening and celebrate all that God is doing!

First, the logistics (because those are no small feat here!):
In this last month, we’ve opened a Panamanian bank account, finalized things with our attorney for temporary residency, set up phones, internet, utilities, etc and—after a lot of trial and error—rebought all the groceries and supplies we lost due to early appliance “drama.” (We’re looking at you, rebellious fridge.) 😅 From getting beds to drying racks, it’s been a process—but we’re now mostly settled and so thankful.

But as we reflect back, the most important part of this journey hasn’t been setting up bank accounts or stocking the pantry…

It’s been the people.

God has been so faithful in opening doors for meaningful relationships—both with fellow believers and those who don’t yet know Him. We’ve met neighbors, Uber drivers, shop owners, repairmen, and fellow parents—and nearly every day brings a new conversation and connection. We’re discovering that every moment here is relational, and we’re leaning into it with open hearts.

We’ve also found a church here in Panama.
We’re getting plugged into a local church that has already blessed us so much. Worshipping in a different language with people from all over the world has been such a powerful reminder that the Gospel is for everyone, everywhere. And wouldn’t you know it—some of the people we had previously connected with online are now part of this very community. Only God could orchestrate that kind of confirmation.

One of the sweetest developments is that we are getting ready to visit a special needs orphanage soon. This has been something on our hearts from the beginning, and we’re so grateful to be taking steps in that direction. We’ve also had several meetings with families and individuals who are passionate about serving children with medical or special needs—and the conversations have been rich with encouragement, ideas, and shared passion.

This first month has been filled with laughs, learning curves, slow traffic, language fumbles, and beautiful breakthroughs. It’s been a month of groundwork—both practically and spiritually—and we truly feel that God is paving the way for what’s to come.

We are here for such a time as this, and we are excited.

Thank you for praying, cheering us on, and walking this journey with us.

With love from Panama,
The Lewis Family
