Hi! My name is Heather, I fell in love with Nicaragua when I came down on my first mission trip at age 11. Since then, the Lord has put a fire in my heart for the language, the culture and the people of Nicaragua. After I graduated college, I came down with plans to serve for 3 months but then Jesus asked me to stay. I have now been living and serving here in Nicaragua for more than 3 years, it is the place I call home and I am honored to serve as a long-term missionary here. My husband, Lester, and I are the directors of a feeding program ministry in the northern mountains of Matagalpa, Nicaragua. It is where the Lord called me to in February 2019, and my husband has been there since November 2017. It is a place that is very special to both of us, we have both spent years loving on the kids and connecting with their families. Lester is a native Nicaraguan and it is so amazing to see how the Lord has called and prepared him to lead this program as a man who is so loved and respected by the community. We have the privilege to minister in ways that go beyond the gates of the feeding center – one on one discipleship with the kids the Lord has highlighted, inviting people into our home for coffee and fellowship, as well as being available to offer support (financial/emotional) for specific needs. We are also involved in our local church, as Lester is one of the worship leaders. We love our lives, we love this country and the Lord has called us to serve this city. Thank you so much for taking the time to get to know us and our ministry. We would be honored to have you partner with us in what the Lord is doing here in Matagalpa, Nicaragua!
We typically serve 50-80 kids (ages 17 and under) on a daily basis, sometimes up to 100. Our mission is that each kid not only enjoys a warm meal, but that they also encounter the love of Jesus when they enter our gates. Many of these kids come from abusive or absent families, so they come to our feeding center for more than just food – they come to have a safe place to play, a time to connect and get lots of hugs! Two days a week we open the gates early and have a time where the staff shares Bible stories, plays games and does crafts with the kids.
