The call, and the mission forward
We have lived all our married life in the States, but it became clear in the Winter of 2016 that God was calling us to relocate to France, a dream that we had been holding in our hearts from the beginning of Miller time!
The time has now come to make the move to France and join in with Nathalie’s father and the church planting network that he has established in the North of France. This network, EMA – Ensemble dans la Mission Apostolique (Together in the Apostolical Mission) has as its vision “Save the lost, Equip and disciple, Plant new churches, and work in close partnership with the larger body of Christ”. http://federation-ema.org/
Our first main objective with EMA will be to assist in the planting of a new church in the Northen suburbs of Lille. Lille is located in the North of France and with its surrounding metropole area has the 4th largest population in France with over 1 million inhabitants. It is referred to as the Crossroads of Europe because of its proximity to Paris, Brussels, London, and Cologne (Germany).
Along with church planting, we will be traveling to minister to many of the other churches in the EMA network which currently includes churches all over France as well as internationally in Congo, Madagascar and Reunion Island. This will include leading worship, preaching, teaching, participating in weekly outreach events, and generally supporting other new church plants as well as ministering to already established churches in the EMA network.
The Spiritual Climate of France
France is a nation with less than 1% of believing Protestant faith. There are many areas of France where no Protestant church exists for miles. In the past, most French people would identify themselves as Catholic, but this almost always was a cultural label rather than a reference to any meaningful life-giving faith. More recently, Catholicism has become an unwanted label and most people will self-identify as atheist, agnostic, or spiritual.
France has a significant Muslim presence with the latest figures at 10 - 15% of the total population. And with the recent terrorist attacks over the last few years, there is a definite spirit of fear present in the country.
Mission outreach
We will also be involved in helping to provide for the needs of an established school in the capital city of Madagascar, Antananarivo. This includes buying land and facilities to expand the school for all grade school levels, providing resources and materials for the students, training new teachers, and providing salary support.
